Having previously collaborated with Meg Baird and Helena Espvall, it should come as no surprise that Sharron Kraus has much in common with the kind of folk music Espers trade in.
There's something rather more traditional about Kraus' music however, tapping into olde English pagan folklore with titles like 'Green Man' and 'Robin Is Dead' and an approach to instrumentation that's part Greg Weeks, part The Wickerman.
Not that there's a great deal of difference between the two. On The Fox's Wedding there's a straddling between visionary psychedelia-influenced harmonics and the traditionalist disciplines of Shirley Collins and Anne Briggs.
Although melodically Kraus sounds vehemently rooted in the mindset that characterised the folk revival of the '60s - something that's firmly reinforced by the old fashioned qualities of her voice - lyrically she's far more modern, at times referencing hippy idealism, at others more personal, expressive musings, and it's all backed up by some wonderful arrangements, calling upon strings, woodwind and a variety of traditional, more archaic instruments.
Highly recommended.
