Michael Cashmore is one of the central components to David Tibet's Current 93, giving the band a melodic core and rich emotional heart with his unique touch on the electric guitar.
Cashmore has always been a shadowy figure in the music world, sidestepping any kind of limelight which may have been thrust on him, and this latest recording is the perfect testament to that sentiment; it is a shy and retiring record, but full of hope, magic and endless life.
Comparable to Robin Guthrie's post Cocteau Twins recordings or even Helios's recent gem 'Eingya', this is an album which steeps itself in British folk tradition yet manages to sound mercilessly contemporary, even poppy at times.
What's more remarkable still is that he only uses a guitar and bass, layering arpeggios and melodies over each other in his own very characteristic style to create heart stopping cinematic love poems to times and moments lost. If you were lucky enough to catch Loren Connors' incredible 'Sails' earlier this year then you'll know how deeply emotional and melancholic solo guitar music can be, and Cashmore has come up with the year's perfect accompaniment for that in 'Sleep England'.
As another tense post-millenial year draws to a close, there can be no better sentiment than this. utterly gorgeous.
